Abstract : The intensive care unit (ICU) is a special treatment room for patients with life-threatening illnesses, has sophisticated equipment, and costs a lot. The reasons for admitting patients to the ICU are varied, including trauma, respiratory failure, myocardial infarction, heart failure, sepsis and septic shock, renal failure, postoperative care, and chemical poisoning. There is a shift in disease that causes death. The number of patients with poisoning and haematological disorders and cancer increased, while gastrointestinal diseases and respiratory disorders decreased with the mortality rate unchanged. This disease shift is very useful for the development of personnel and equipment resources in the ICU. This study aims to find the relationship between diagnosis and subjects who died in the ICU so that it can be used as a reference for action and treatment for subjects with related diagnoses. In this study, 107 dead and alive subjects in the ICU at Wirosaban Hospital were taken randomly from medical records in 2022. Variable data found in patients who died in the ICU were then compared to living subjects and statistically analysis using bivariate chi square analysis to see the significant relationship statistically significant (p<0.05). The results showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between the diagnoses of septic shock, hypertension, heart problems, and kidney failure on death in the ICU. In this study, it was not seen whether the subject had 1 or more diagnoses that were interrelated with the subject's condition. Further research is still needed to look for variables that influence the death of subjects such as laboratory results and actions given to subjects in the Wirosaban Yogyakarta Hospital ICU other than based on diagnosis.
