Abstract : Infertility is a growing health problem around the world, and the reasons for its increasing rates in recent years are still poorly understood. Obesity is currently one of the biggest global health challenges due to its rapid spread and its association with many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Studies have also shown that obesity is associated with sexual dysfunction in both sexes. Several studies suggested the positive impact of bariatric surgery on testosterone and estradiol impairments, but their results were contradictory. Thus, we aimed in the current study to evaluate the impact of bariatric surgeries on testosterone and estradiol levels. The current prospective study included 66 obese patients with morbid obesity who all underwent bariatric surgery. Testosterone and estradiol concentrations were measured in these patients before surgery and at three, six, and 12 months after the procedure. Our results showed that bariatric surgery resulted in a statistically significant reduction in BMI from 51.3 ± 12.1 to 33.53 ± 7.7 one year after the surgery. In addition, testosterone levels significantly increased from 3.27 ± 1.25 ng/ml to 4 ± 1.14 ng/ml a 12 month post-operatively. However, estradiol levels declined after the surgery but without significant difference. In conclusion, bariatric surgery is effective in reduction BMI and increasing testosterone levels in morbidly obese men underwent bariatric surgery.
