Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major cause of death in India and worldwide. Awareness of cardiovascular disease among school children leaves much to be desired. HeartRescue India (HRI) is an international project working to improve care for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Our aim was to develop a comprehensive school CVD education program and our objective was to assess for its effectiveness among high school children of urban Bangalore. Government and private schools within a 10 km radius of the authors’ institution were identified. 424 students of 8th standard were included after consent from principal and parents. The authors designed a 9-module program, each with pre- and post-assessments, an interactive session, a group activity, and a take-home assignment aimed at encouraging parental engagement in CVD discussions at home. Students received handouts on Hands-only CPR steps and stroke recognition to share and explain to their parents. Paired-sample t-tests and sigma two-tailed analysis were used to assess improvement after intervention. A two-tailed analysis of pre- and post-assessment scores for the modules showed significant improvement in mean scores of knowledge in 14 out of 18 assessment questions after the training. Modules 3-6, focusing on bystander response to sudden cardiac arrest, assessed both knowledge and skills where significant improvements were found in chest compression depth and recoil, with overall HOCPR scores increasing from 62.13 ± 28.40 to 72.64 ± 26.35 (p < 0.001). CVD education is the need of the hour and our modules are effective in educating high school children in CVD prevention and hands-only CPR.
